9 of Fire is indicative of concluding a cycle by facing a rite of passage or final challenge that stimulates and tempts our willpower, primal energy, & sexuality as expressed through the ego, masculine determination and ambition.  It carries an inference of death and rebirth “by fire” (like a phoenix, possessing the inextinguishable life force) in which parts of ourselves are burned away (refined) in order that we can be reborn as one who is able to rise above and surpass the ruins of what we once were.  Common themes are (1) resilience & perseverance, (2) determination & protection, (3) boundaries, (4) facing opposition and protecting what is important to you, (5) drawing upon past experiences to be prepared for future challenges, (6) persistence & endurance in the face of challenges.
